Oyster Shucking Ends at P&J Oyster On Rampart Street
Firm will buy pre-shucked oysters from Alabama but may have to close indefinitely
Thursday, June 10, 2010
A 134-year-old New Orleans oyster house is laying off its employees after shucking its last batch of Louisiana oysters Thursday morning.
The BP oil spill has forced closure of the oyster beds that are the main source for the family-owned P&J Oyster Co. on North Rampart Street.
Co-owner Al Sunseri has laid off his employees and hopes they’ll be taken care of by BP.
“This is our last day, I don’t have any prospects to get any oysters - they closed one of the main areas where we get our oysters from,” Sunseri said.
“Barataria Basin is where P & J has made its name over the years and that whole basin is now closed.”
Sunseri says its difficult to let employees go.
“These guys, I grew up with them - they’re my friends.”
He’ll buy pre-shucked oysters from an Alabama supplier but he doesn’t expect that to last long. Then, he says, he’ll have to shut down indefinitely.
Other Louisiana oyster companies say their supplies are dwindling, prices are rising and they aren’t sure how long they’ll be able to stay in business.
